Need a storm damage roof report in Hampshire?

How a storm damage roof report works in Hampshire

Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Your policy document sets out its own definition. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We survey gutters and fascias, slate and tile slopes and ridges and hips, and common reasons people get in touch are lead lifted at abutments and slates and tiles blown off the roof.

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

What you will pay

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Storm damage roof reports across Hampshire: local notes

Leaks across Hampshire tend to show up after heavy rain or a change in the wind. From Basingstoke, Winchester and Gosport outwards, the search starts inside and works back to the roof.

Autumn and winter storms across the South East find any loose slate, tile or ridge. Ridges, verges and flashings in Hampshire are where it typically shows. In the coastal parts of Hampshire, the seaward side of a roof takes the most weather, so ridges, verges and flashings there frequently need attention first.

Basingstoke: The Vyne, about 2.9 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Basingstoke. On older roofs nearby, leaks often trace back to lead flashings, valleys and gutters. If you live near a park such as Eastrop Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It records the damage and what seems to have caused it, so you’re not relying only on your own photos.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Their report turnaround times
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price

DIY checks: what’s safe

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What affects the price in Hampshire

We confirm the price for your survey before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • How big the roof is
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you contact us:

  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • What kind of property and roof it is

For a price for storm damage roof reports in Hampshire, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. The address, the type of property and what you’d like to know help us price the survey accurately.

Before and after the survey

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Check your policy for how to report damage

Your insurer may send a loss adjuster to look at the damage. You will have your own independent record to refer to.

Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

What we are asked to look at in Hampshire

Flat roofs can be damaged too. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Lead lifted at abutments
  • Damaged ridges and hips
  • Roofs hit by falling trees

Hampshire: your questions answered

What’s the best way to book?

The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we’ll point you to the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Emergency temporary protection is a job for a roofer. If it’s safe, take photos before it goes on. We can record the damage in our report.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Typically, if there is one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We aren’t loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage for you to send to your insurer.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll plan the survey around it.
