About chimney surveys in Hampshire
Our survey covers the structure of the stack and its weathering details. It isn’t a flue inspection, a sweep or a gas safety check. If you use a fire or a gas appliance, the flue should be checked by a sweep or a Gas Safe registered engineer as appropriate. If something we see points to the flue, we’ll say so. We survey flaunching, lead flashings and chimney pots and cowls, and common reasons people get in touch are damaged chimney pots and cowls and flaunching that has broken away.
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take about one to two hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof.
- You tell us how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- The stacks are looked at from ground level, from windows and from other safe vantage points.
- Every part we can see is checked: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and flashings.
- Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations and emailed to you.

Around Basingstoke
Typical jobs here are in homes near King's Furlong Infant School and Nursery, Cranbourne and Eastrop Park and the streets around them. Nearby too are The Rising Sun pub (0.5 miles north-east), St Michael's Church (0.5 miles east) and The Costello School (1 mile east). For rail, the closest station is Basingstoke station, roughly 0.6 miles east of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Basing House (2.2 miles east) and The Malls (0.6 miles east). Open spaces near Basingstoke include Farleigh Hill and Daneshill Park Woods.
Homes and roofs across Hampshire
In Hampshire, our chimney surveys work takes in owners, landlords and managing agents, in Basingstoke, Winchester and Gosport and well beyond. Each report sets out what was seen, with photos and recommendations.
Our surveys reach from London out to Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Essex, the Thames Valley, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and Hampshire is well within that. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. Near the coast in Hampshire, wind can be strong, which matters for drone flights, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind, so the weather on the day decides. Roofs there also face driving rain and salt air.
Basingstoke: Shop and office owners around The Malls may find that a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks. Homes near green spaces like Eastrop Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.
What happens if roof problems are left?
A loose pot or brick can fall from height. Finding them early means they can be dealt with before they come down by a suitable contractor.
Before you book any surveyor
- Is VAT included in the price?
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Their insurance cover
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the addresses.
What affects the cost of chimney surveys
To price your survey, we look at:
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- House, block, shop or office
- How big the roof is
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
Helping us price your survey
A little information up front helps. It is useful to include:
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and give us a few details about the property and we will suggest the right survey. The price is agreed up front.
Signs you need a chimney survey
Removing a chimney breast inside can leave questions about how the stack is supported. We record what we can see in the loft and outside, and recommend a structural engineer where support is in question.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Signs that a stack is leaning
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
- Mortar washing out of the joints
Can I check my roof myself?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
FAQs for Hampshire
Our stack is shared. Can you still survey it?
Yes. Shared stacks are common on terraced and semi-detached houses. We survey what we can see safely, and note anything that seems to involve next door.
Can you find out why my chimney breast is damp?
It can come from several places: water getting in at the top, through the brickwork or at the flashings, or moisture trapped in a stack with no ventilation. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, and it is agreed before booking.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report.
How do I arrange a chimney survey in Hampshire?
It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we will suggest the right survey. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
What’s in the report?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
