Hound Chimney Survey
Know where you stand with the chimney stack before you spend money on it. We carry out chimney surveys in Hound, with photos and a clear written report.
- Cracked or missing flaunching
- A stack that appears to lean
- Damaged chimney pots and cowls
Practical tips
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Remove aerials or dishes from the stack if they’re no longer needed
- Find out whether changes to a stack need permission
- Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
- Have the flue swept and checked if you use the fire
Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
Make sure fixings on the stack are sound, and moved if they’re working it loose. Removing unused fixings takes strain off the brickwork.
Chimney survey in Hound: what you get
Damp on a chimney breast can have several causes. Water may be getting in at the top through cracked flaunching or an uncapped pot, through the brickwork, or at the flashings. Condensation inside an unventilated stack is another common cause. We look at each possibility and record what we find. That points the work in the right direction. We survey flaunching, chimney breasts and chimney pots and cowls, and common reasons people get in touch are damp on a chimney breast inside and signs that a stack is leaning.
In a small place like Hound, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.
The report does not just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Common roof problems in Hound
Stacks that were used for open fires for many years can weaken from the inside. Mortar can deteriorate unevenly from flue gases and moisture, which can make a stack lean.
We are frequently asked to look at:
- Damaged chimney pots and cowls
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Damp on a chimney breast inside
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
If you let a flat or house near Netley station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
Questions to ask before booking
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- How long the report takes to arrive
- What exactly goes into their report
Why it is worth a survey now in Hound
A loose pot or brick can fall from height. A survey picks them out so they can be made safe by a roofer. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the exact price before you book.

What we look for on each type of roof
Chimney breasts and the loft
Stains on timbers or brickwork around the stack can point to a leak. What we find is photographed and described.
Rendered stacks
We can’t see the bricks behind render without it being opened up, so the report says what can and cannot be judged.
Local roofs in Hound
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Hound, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. The wider area around Hound has a long history of building, with Medieval Merchant's House about 3.4 miles north-west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
The streets around a church like Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings like The Hamble School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Common questions in Hound
Can a landlord with a rental near Netley station book a roof survey?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us about the building.
Do you cover smaller places like Hound?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
What will the report tell me?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. Points are put by urgency where it matters.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.

What we need to know
What helps most when you contact us:
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- The address and postcode of the property
- Anything about access we should know
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
The survey, step by step
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take an hour or two at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Somewhere like Hound needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We look at every stack from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Before the survey
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
