Roof survey in SO43: how it works
There is no single reason to have a roof surveyed. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, others want a check before selling or after years without one. Whatever the reason, the survey works the same way: a careful look, then a clear written report. Visits run seven days a week, so it is easy to find a day that suits. We survey flat roofs, ridges, hips and valleys and the roof space, and the problems we are asked to look at most are flashings that have come away from the wall and slates or tiles that have slipped or broken.
We’ll ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- We look at the roof from each safe vantage point outside.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters across SO43
From Lyndhurst, Emery Down and Minstead to smaller places, people across SO43 use a roof survey to plan ahead. Small faults, caught early, are far easier to deal with.
We work right across London and South East England, from the Isle of Wight to Hertfordshire, and SO43 is well within that. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends.
Lyndhurst: Anyone responsible for a site like St Michael and All Angels CofE Infant School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If you live in an older home near Church of Our Lady and St Edward, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Why act early?
Planned work is less stressful than an emergency. With a report, you can tackle the urgent jobs first and plan the rest, rather than waiting for something to fail.
What to check before booking
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- What happens after the report arrives
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
What we are asked to look at in SO43
The underlay under the coverings matters too. Breathable membranes only appeared in the UK in the late 1990s, so many older roofs have bitumen felt underlay, and some very old roofs have no underlay at all. Torn or sagging felt lets water through.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
- Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
- Debris building up in roof valleys
- Torn or sagging underlay

What we need to know
A little information up front helps. It helps to include:
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- When you need the report by

DIY checks: what’s safe
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Landlords, agents and block managers in SO43
Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.
With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Common questions in SO43
Does someone need to be in?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when booking.
Do you work in SO43?
Yes, we do. SO43 is part of the area we cover.
Can you tell me how long my roof will last?
We do not give a number of years. We describe the condition of each part of the roof and how it’s wearing, and we say what needs attention and how urgently.
Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?
Yes, the part you own or can give access to. We can only look at neighbouring roofs as far as access allows. Shared chimneys and party-wall upstands are checked from your side.
When will the report arrive?
Premium reports arrive the same day, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Photos are included.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Will you check the loft?
If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.
