Storm damage roof reports in Lyndhurst

Storm damage roof report in Lyndhurst

Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Check your own policy wording. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. The claim decision rests with your insurer. We’re frequently asked to look into slates and tiles blown off the roof and roofs hit by falling trees, on chimney stacks, flashings and slate and tile slopes.

Houses in smaller places like Lyndhurst can stand more in the open, so wind and driving rain find any weakness in ridges, verges and flashings. If a leak shows only when the wind is in a certain direction, that is a useful clue. It helps to know when and where the water appears. The gutters on the most exposed side can overflow too.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Tips from our surveys

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can

You get the report by email and pass it to your insurer yourself. We do not deal with the insurer on your behalf.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Lyndhurst

Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

What affects the price in Lyndhurst

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.

Helping us price your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat

Lyndhurst: your questions answered

Do you cover Lyndhurst?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Lyndhurst is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and some details.

Will you come out to Lyndhurst?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Safely, from ground level or a window. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Binoculars can help you see damage from below and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we can’t say how it will turn out.

Wind, rain and roofs in Lyndhurst

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.

Landlords with a home close to Ashurst New Forest station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Lyndhurst, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use.

When to book a survey in Lyndhurst

Branches and trees often come down on roofs during storms. We record the damage and where it is, with photos.

Common reasons to book include:

  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Broken or displaced guttering
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls

The streets around a church such as Church of Our Lady and St Edward are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

What a roof survey includes

What you can safely check yourself

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

What happens on the day

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, it typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. In a smaller place like Lyndhurst, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Let us know about parking near the property
