About our chimney survey in Mattingley
Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and the flashings at the roof line. Inside, we check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft where it’s safe to reach. The findings come in a written report with photos and recommendations. We survey single stacks on houses and groups of stacks on bigger buildings. If you are worried about eroded joints in the brickwork and frost-damaged brickwork on the stack, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Mattingley, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Mattingley questions
Do you cover smaller places like Mattingley?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Mattingley?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you check the loft?
Typically, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.
Should a redundant chimney be removed?
There’s no single answer. We record how the stack is doing and whether it is capped with ventilation. If you’re thinking of removing it, check with the council first in a conservation area or on a listed building.
Why is my chimney breast damp?
Typically it is water getting in from outside, or condensation in a sealed stack. The survey looks at the stack, the flashings and the capping, and record what we find.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
Should I worry about a leaning stack?
Don’t ignore it. Stacks can lean when mortar on one side breaks down. The survey records what we can see, and a structural engineer can confirm whether it’s stable.
Signs you need a chimney survey in Mattingley
A stack takes the weather from every direction. Frost opens up cracks in the mortar, and rain gets into worn bricks and joints. People normally call us when they notice damp or a problem with the stack, or before a purchase.
Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Flashings pulling away from the stack
- Damp patches on chimney breasts
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
For an older house near a landmark such as Mattingley Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Why act early in Mattingley
Cracked flaunching and worn pointing are often modest repairs when they’re caught early. Left for a few winters, frost and water can loosen pots and bricks and the job gets bigger. In a place like Mattingley, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
What you get with us

How the survey works
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it typically takes between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Around Mattingley, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- You let us know whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- The flashings and the roof around each chimney are inspected.
- The top of each stack is checked for cracked flaunching and loose pots.
- We note the brickwork, pointing and any sign of leaning.
- The report explains the condition and which work is most urgent.
Before we arrive
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Leave side gates unlocked

Advice
For landlords and managing agents
With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.
DIY checks: what’s safe
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

The wider area around Mattingley has a long history of building, with Stratfield Saye House about 3.1 miles north-west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
