Drone roof survey in Mattingley
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address ahead of the visit. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. Common reasons to book are ridge and hip pieces working loose and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, on tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and chimney stacks.
Older buildings in small places like Mattingley may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Honest limits
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Close-up photos of next door’s property

Roof types and parts we check
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
Common roof problems in Mattingley
Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
Historic houses like Stratfield Saye House, about 3.1 miles north-west, show how far back building around Mattingley goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- What exactly goes into their report
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
Why get it checked now?
Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Around Mattingley, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

Different roofs, different checks
Large commercial roofs
Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. Their condition is noted in the report.
Checking the roof from the ground
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in.
Mattingley questions
Is my home in Mattingley listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is drone flying allowed in Mattingley?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the freeholder or managing agent. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll explain what’s needed.
What if it rains on the day?
Light rain doesn’t normally stop a survey, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Strong wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so if conditions are not right we will arrange another day with you.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

How the survey works
We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a hamlet or village like Mattingley, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
