How a drone roof survey works in Lyde Green

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We are frequently asked to look into flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and outlets choked with leaves and silt, across large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and chimney stacks.

Somewhere as small as Lyde Green, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is usually out of view. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Valleys and parapet gutters are hidden from the street. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Rural addresses near Lyde Green can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Booking a survey

Booking is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or email us, let us know about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Related advice

Before and after the survey

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Let us know the exact address when booking
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Lyde Green

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Lyde Green?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Lyde Green?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

How much is a survey?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before you book. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

When does the report arrive?

Each package has its own report time. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when booking.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only if it is safe. We check everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

Is Lyde Green in your area?

Yes, we do. We carry out drone roof surveys in Lyde Green.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Lyde Green

We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons.

For an older house near a landmark such as Rotherwick Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Stratfield Saye House, about 2.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Lyde Green. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.

What we’re asked to look at in Lyde Green

Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves

If you look after a building like Whitewater Church of England Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
