Drone Roof Survey in Hampshire

How a drone roof survey works in Hampshire

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it is not safe. We survey chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and fragile roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below and standing water on a flat roof.

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. All told, expect an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Airspace, weather and roofs across Hampshire

Across Hampshire, the clearest thermal images come after a sunny day on a dry, calm roof. What it shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

We work right across London and the South East, from the Isle of Wight to Hertfordshire, and Hampshire is well within that. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. In the coastal parts of Hampshire, the seaward side of a roof takes the most weather, and that is where ridges, verges and flashings typically show it first.

Basingstoke: Historic houses such as The Vyne, about 2.9 miles north, show how far back building around Basingstoke goes. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Take a building like King's Furlong Infant School and Nursery: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Can I check my roof myself?

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. Looking from above picks up the early signs.

What to check before booking

  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • What insurance they carry
  • How long the report takes to arrive

Useful tips for Hampshire property owners

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Keep the roof space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

For landlords and managing agents

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.

Common roof problems in Hampshire

After storms, owners want to know what has moved. It is hard to tell from below what has shifted. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Wind damage high on the roof

Hampshire questions

Can a drone see inside my loft?

No. It photographs the outside, not the inside. For the underside, we check the loft where it can be reached safely.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.

How quickly is the report sent?

It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey.

Is Hampshire in your area?

Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and that includes Hampshire.

Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?

We are. The CAA has issued us a Flyer ID and an Operator ID, and we fly a drone that weighs under 250g.
