Rockbourne Drone Roof Survey
We carry out drone roof surveys in Rockbourne and the rest of Hampshire. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
How a drone roof survey works in Rockbourne
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a report with photographs. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We’re often asked to look into ridge and hip pieces working loose and standing water on a flat roof, across large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and chimney stacks.
Older buildings in small places like Rockbourne may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Common questions in Rockbourne
Is my home in Rockbourne listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Are there drone restrictions around Rockbourne?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
How long does the survey take?
Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. We will confirm the timing when you book.
How the survey works
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older rural homes like those around Rockbourne can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
Book a survey
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Honest limits
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
- A structural engineer’s report
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

Drones, thermal imaging and Rockbourne roofs
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Breamore House, about 2.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Rockbourne. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Anyone responsible for a site like Western Downland Church of England Aided Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What you can safely check yourself
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Why act early in Rockbourne
A drone survey disturbs nothing on the roof. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so you see the roof exactly as it is. In a small place like Rockbourne, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.

Tips that help
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Make sure there’s room outside for the drone to take off
Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit.
Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
Do you need a drone roof survey in Rockbourne?
From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Problems in those places often go unseen until they leak.
Common reasons to book include:
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Andrew, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
What to check before booking
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Their insurance cover
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
