How a roof survey works in SP6
People book a roof survey for all sorts of reasons. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, others want a check before selling or after years without one. The approach is the same in each case: we inspect carefully and explain what we see in writing. Visits run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, so it is easy to find a day that suits. We survey clay and concrete tiles, natural slate and flat roofs, and people most often book us about cracked or blistered flat roof coverings and cracked mortar along the ridge.
Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit typically takes about one to two hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof.
- We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
- We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
- We inspect from ground level, from windows, from the roof space and from the roof where safe.
- Every part of the roof is checked and photographed.
- We email a written report with photos and recommendations.

Booking a survey
Once you know what you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date, weekday or weekend.
Near you in Fordingbridge
Typical jobs here are in homes near The Burgate School and Sixth Form, Fordingbridge Junior School and The Ship Inn and the streets around them. Well-known places in the area include Godshill Castle Hill (1.6 miles north-east) and Fordingbridge Museum (under half a mile south-east). Open spaces near Fordingbridge include Blashford Lakes and Linbrook Lake.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters across SP6
Owners across SP6, from Fordingbridge, Alderholt and Ashford to the villages, book us to find out where their roof stands. Small faults, caught early, are far easier to deal with.
We work right across London and South East England, from the Isle of Wight to Hertfordshire, SP6 included. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends.
Fordingbridge: For an older house near a landmark like St Mary's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Breamore House, about 2.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Fordingbridge. On a period home nearby, the survey separates sound original work from tired later repairs.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Hidden gutters and valleys can fail without warning. When they do, water comes straight into the house. A survey checks them while they’re still dry.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
Before and after the survey
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Let us know about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
- Hold on to the report for future surveys
- Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
We email the report to you, with photographs of what we found. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Each finding is set out in plain English.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Routine surveys pick up wear before it leaks. Compare each report with the last.
What a survey does not cover
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- A full building survey of the property
- An exact number of years the roof has left
- A structural engineer’s report
Signs you need a roof survey
The coverings are rarely the first thing to fail. On slate roofs, corroded nails let slates slip, which is known as ‘nail fatigue’. On tiled roofs, battens and pegs can rot.
Common reasons to book include:
- Worn or blocked valleys
- Leaking gutter joints and downpipes
- Loose ridge or hip tiles
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
Questions from SP6
Does the weather affect the survey?
Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.
How soon is the report ready?
That depends on which survey you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s emailed to you.
Do you work in SP6?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and that includes SP6.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
