Roof survey in Criddlestyle: what you get
The report is written for you, in plain language. Each defect is described with photographs and a recommendation, and where it’s relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where applicable and a same-day report. Reports are sent by email. If you’ve noticed blocked, sagging or leaking gutters and loose ridge or hip tiles, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a small place like Criddlestyle, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Roof surveys around Criddlestyle
Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you look after a building such as The Burgate School and Sixth Form, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Historic houses such as Breamore House, about 3 miles north, show how far back building around Criddlestyle goes. If you own one of the older houses, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up.

Common roof problems in Criddlestyle
The coverings are rarely the first thing to fail. ‘Nail fatigue’ is common on slate roofs: the nails rust and the slates slide. On tiled roofs, battens and pegs can rot.
People normally book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Loose ridge or hip tiles
- Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Valley linings that have cracked or split
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St Giles, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
What to check before booking
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Their report turnaround times
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether you get a written report with photos
Roof by roof
Flat roof coverings
Ponding, blistering, splits and cracked surfaces are the common warning signs. We also look at the edges, upstands and outlets.
Natural slate
Inside the roof space, we check what’s under the slates. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none, and we note its condition.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Criddlestyle
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
Questions from Criddlestyle
How do I find out if my home in Criddlestyle is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Criddlestyle within the area you cover?
Yes. Criddlestyle is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when you book.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when booking.
Do you look in the roof space?
Typically, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof frequently shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
Will the report say how many years my roof has left?
Not as a figure. The report explains the condition of each part and the signs of wear, with recommendations ranked by urgency.
What happens on the day
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take between one and two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. For a village or hamlet like Criddlestyle, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- We email a written report with photographs and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Check the loft hatch can be reached

Leave it or get it looked at?
Leaving it means relying on what you can see from the ground. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or to a real problem being missed. We tell you what’s really needed. Older cottages and farmhouses around Criddlestyle can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
