How a roof survey works in Ringwood

Good roofs last decades, but their parts wear at different rates. Slate often lasts a century or more, and tiles commonly half a century, yet nails, battens and underlay often fail first. We tell you which parts are ageing and which are sound. Knowing that helps you plan work before it becomes urgent. If you’ve noticed debris building up in roof valleys and cracked mortar along the ridge, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

In a smaller place like Ringwood, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are usually where the work is. Nails and battens under older coverings frequently give out before the slates or tiles themselves.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What we cannot see

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
  • Asbestos testing of any kind

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Natural slate
  • Ridges, hips and valleys
  • Clay and concrete tiles
  • Chimney stacks
  • Lead flashings
  • The roof space
  • Flat roofs

Landlords, agents and block managers in Ringwood

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant in advance.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Ringwood

If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

If you live near a park such as Avon Heath Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Trinity Congregational Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

What we need to know

There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

What happens on the day

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Parking around Ringwood is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. You pick the package that suits your roof.
  2. On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
  3. Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
  4. Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
  5. You get a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

FAQs for Ringwood

Do you cover smaller places like Ringwood?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Is Ringwood in the area you cover?

Yes, Ringwood is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and South East England. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details.

How long does the visit take?

Allow roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. We will give you an idea of timing when booking.

Will you climb onto the roof?

Where it’s safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. On Premium, a drone is used where it applies.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

Do you give a life expectancy for the roof?

We do not put a figure on it, since the fixings, underlay and maintenance all play a part. Instead, we set out what’s sound, what’s wearing and what to do first.

Will you check the loft?

Where it’s relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.

Signs you need a roof survey in Ringwood

Some damage starts inside the loft space. Poor ventilation lets condensation build up in the loft, and the damp gets into timbers and insulation. It’s frequently mistaken for a leak.

People usually book a survey after spotting one of these:

  • Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
  • Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
  • Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
  • Lifted, split or missing lead flashings

Avon Tyrrell House lies about 3.6 miles south-east, so building around Ringwood goes back a long way. On a period home nearby, the survey separates sound original work from tired later repairs.
