Chimney surveys in Ringwood

About our chimney survey in Ringwood

On terraced and semi-detached houses, a chimney stack is frequently shared with next door. We check what can be seen safely and what the owner gives us access to. If a defect appears to be on the neighbour’s side, we note it, so you can talk to them. You get a written report with photos and our recommendations. Common reasons to book are damaged chimney pots and cowls and gaps where the stack meets the roof, on chimney pots and cowls, shared and party-wall stacks and chimney breasts.

In a smaller place like Ringwood, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. A close look shows whether anything has started to loosen before it lets water in. Once one ridge tile or slate moves, wind gets under the next one too.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Checking the roof from ground level

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Why act early in Ringwood

If a stack seems to lean, don’t leave it. We record its condition and recommend a structural engineer where needed, so you can decide what to do next. Around Ringwood, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Why book with us

  • Surveys seven days a week
  • Independent findings on the roof’s condition
  • Two decades and more of roof surveys
  • Package prices that include VAT

Useful tips for Ringwood property owners

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Don’t use a ladder to reach the stack yourself
  • Keep the report to compare against at the next survey
  • Book a sweep for flues that are in use
  • Make sure unused flues are capped with ventilation

After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each stack. It covers the pots, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings, and any damp we found inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Unused stacks should be capped in a way that still lets air through. Ventilation helps keep the stack dry.

What we do, step by step

It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Ringwood, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.

  1. We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
  2. Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
  3. Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
  4. We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the roof space.
  5. The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Find any records of previous roof work

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney breasts and the loft

Damp patches on chimney breasts frequently point to a problem above. We check them and at the stack in the loft where there is safe access.

Chimney pots and cowls

Pots sit in the flaunching on top of the stack, and cowls or caps sit on the pots. The survey looks for cracked, loose or missing pots and cowls.

FAQs for Ringwood

Is my home in Ringwood listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Ringwood?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.

What does the report include?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.

How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?

We inspect from wherever is safe: from ground level, windows and vantage points, and from the loft where there is access. A drone inspection is included in our Premium Survey where it applies. If part of a stack can’t be seen, the report says so.

Should I worry about a leaning stack?

Don’t ignore it. Stacks can lean when mortar on one side breaks down. We record its condition with photographs, and a structural engineer can assess whether it needs work.

How much is a survey?

Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, and it’s agreed before booking.

How do I arrange a chimney survey in Ringwood?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

What a chimney survey looks like in Ringwood

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Historic houses such as Avon Tyrrell House, about 3.6 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Ringwood goes. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

Take a building like Ringwood School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. For an older house near a landmark such as Trinity Congregational Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. Trees in and around Avon Heath Country Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The size of the roof
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.

What to let us know when you get in touch

There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to phone 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll explain the options and the price.
