Your questions about chimney surveys in Upper Kingston

Is Upper Kingston in the area you cover?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Upper Kingston as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Do you cover smaller places like Upper Kingston?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

How do I arrange a chimney survey in Upper Kingston?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we’ll suggest the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Do you look in the loft space?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We carry out surveys on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Chimney survey in Upper Kingston

On terraced and semi-detached houses, a chimney stack is frequently shared with next door. We inspect the parts we can see safely and the parts the owner gives us access to. If a defect appears to be on the neighbour’s side, we note it and you can then discuss it with them. You get a photo-illustrated written report and our recommendations. If you are worried about signs that a stack is leaning and damaged chimney pots and cowls, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Older buildings in small places like Upper Kingston may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

How the survey changes by roof type

Lead flashings

Lead flashings seal the joint between the stack and the roof. We check for lifting, splits and gaps in the joints.

Rendered stacks

We cannot see the bricks behind render without it being opened up, so the report explains what we could and couldn’t assess.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:

  • Don’t use a ladder to reach the stack yourself
  • Check fixings on the stack are secure
  • Make sure unused flues are capped with ventilation
  • Use the report as a baseline for future checks

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It explains the condition of each part of the stack and any damp inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Have aerial and dish brackets on the stack checked and taken off if they’re no longer needed. Less load on the stack means less strain in wind.

What a survey costs

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Roof area
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.

What we need to know

There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

You can call us seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

How it works

The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect about 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere as small as Upper Kingston, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. First you let us know about the chimneys, any damp on the chimney breasts and any worries.
  2. We inspect each stack from safe viewpoints outside.
  3. The pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings are checked and photographed.
  4. Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access.
  5. You get a report with photographs and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

Common roof problems in Upper Kingston

Aerials and dishes are often fixed to stacks. The extra load in wind can work bricks and joints loose. We check fixings on the stack as part of the survey.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Damp patches on chimney breasts
  • Pots or cowls that look unsafe
  • Spalled or crumbling bricks
  • Disused chimneys trapping moisture

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Ringwood Junior School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Questions to ask before booking

  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Whether the price includes VAT

What’s in a roof survey

Chimney surveys in Upper Kingston: local notes

Historic houses such as Avon Tyrrell House, about 2.6 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Upper Kingston goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

For an older house near a landmark such as Trinity Congregational Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
