We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as homeowners. A written report with photographs gives you a clear record of the roof.
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
How a thermal roof survey works in Ringwood
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera does not see water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. If you are worried about areas of a flat roof that may hold water and water that travels before it shows, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In smaller places like Ringwood, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. The parts you cannot see, like rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from the ground misses.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photograph. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

What else we do in Ringwood
Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.
Why get it checked now?
Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. In an older home around Ringwood, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Drones, thermal imaging and Ringwood roofs
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. About 3.6 miles south-east lies Avon Tyrrell House, a reminder of how long the area around Ringwood has been built on. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you look after a building such as Ringwood School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

When to book a survey in Ringwood
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. The camera helps narrow the search.
People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Stains that keep coming back
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
Take an older house close to Trinity Congregational Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What exactly goes into their report
- When you will get the report
- What the survey won’t cover
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
When you need someone else
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- An energy rating for the building
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

Questions from Ringwood
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ringwood?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you come out to Ringwood?
Yes, Ringwood is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.
What does the report include?
Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, with the most urgent first where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
How the survey works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Ringwood is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
How to prepare
- Tell us about parking before the day
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
