Gutter surveys in Fordingbridge

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take about one to two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Homes around Fordingbridge often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
  4. The loft space is checked for water marks if it is safe to get into.
  5. We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

How a gutter survey works in Fordingbridge

We look at the rainwater system above ground level: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It isn’t a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, the report will say so, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. If you are worried about gutters packed with leaves or moss and hoppers and outlets full of debris, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a smaller place like Fordingbridge, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are normally where the work is, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. Nails and battens under older coverings often give out before the slates or tiles themselves.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Questions from Fordingbridge

Will you come out to Fordingbridge?

Yes, Fordingbridge is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Fordingbridge?

Yes, Fordingbridge is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

Is a CCTV drain survey included?

No, we don’t carry out CCTV drain surveys. We check gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.

What’s the price of a gutter survey?

The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all including VAT. For a price for your building, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

When is the best time for a gutter survey?

Any time of year works. Before the wetter months gives you time to plan any work, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.

Gutter surveys around Fordingbridge

The wider area around Fordingbridge has a long history of building, with Breamore House about 2.8 miles north. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Fordingbridge Junior School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

When you need someone else

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe
  • Pipes below ground level

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Eaves gutters
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Valley gutters

Leave it or get it looked at?

Water spilling from a gutter runs down and soaks the wall below. Given time, it can cause damp patches, damaged pointing and rot in nearby timber. Spotting the problem early tends to mean a simpler fix. Around Fordingbridge, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

When to book a survey in Fordingbridge

Hidden gutters are frequently lined with lead or another sheet covering. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside, because there is no outer edge for it to spill over. Lead is also a target for theft.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Leaks at the gutter joints
  • Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
  • Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
  • Gutters that have fallen out of line

For an older house near a landmark like St Mary's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • Their insurance cover
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included

What’s in a roof survey

What we look for on each type of roof

Cast iron gutters

Cracks frequently open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we look closely at the walls around them.

Fascias and soffits

On buildings from before 2000, soffits may be asbestos cement. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
