Gutter surveys in Ringwood

Landlords, agents and block managers in Ringwood

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Gutter survey in Ringwood

Gutters are typically fixed to fascia boards, so fascias and soffits are part of the survey. Long-term overflowing can soften and rot timber boards and stain the soffits below. Older buildings, from before 2000, can have asbestos cement soffits, gutters or downpipes. We don’t test for asbestos, but we flag anything that could contain it. We survey valley gutters, eaves gutters and outlets and hoppers, and people most often book us about gutters full of debris and silt and hoppers and outlets full of debris.

Houses in smaller places like Ringwood can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. A close look shows whether anything has started to loosen before it lets water in. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Being in a smaller place like Ringwood doesn’t change how the visit works: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. It is useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and vantage points.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
  4. The loft space is checked for water marks if it is safe to get into.
  5. We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Arrange a survey

Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Advice

Do you need a gutter survey in Ringwood?

Lots of tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that holds water in the gutter and lets weeds take root.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
  • Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
  • Blocked outlets and hoppers

Homes near green spaces such as Avon Heath Country Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • How long the report takes to arrive

What to expect from a roof survey

Honest limits

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
  • Pipes below ground level
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Eaves gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Valley gutters

Tips from our surveys

Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
  • Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters
  • Note any damp stains below the gutters
  • Look for downpipes coming loose

Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we’re there.

Watch your gutters from the ground or a window during heavy rain. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before damage builds up.

Ringwood: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ringwood?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Ringwood?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?

Overflowing gutters often lead to damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we’ll say so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.

How fast do I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.

Will you check the drains below ground?

No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Will I get photos?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.

Gutter surveys around Ringwood

With Avon Tyrrell House about 3.6 miles south-east, Ringwood sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.

If you look after a building such as Ringwood School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Trinity Congregational Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Why get it checked now?

Damp walls are sometimes blamed on the wrong thing. If a leaking gutter or downpipe is the source, other work on the wall will not stop it. A gutter survey helps rule the rainwater system in or out. Around Ringwood, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
