Roof leak investigations in Ringwood: local notes
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. The wider area around Ringwood has a long history of building, with Avon Tyrrell House about 3.6 miles south-east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
Take an older house close to Trinity Congregational Church: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. If you live near a park like Avon Heath Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Ringwood School, a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Roof leak investigation in Ringwood: what you get
Older homes have more places for water to get in. Lead flashings crack or lift, valley linings wear and parapet gutters overflow when outlets block. A central valley gutter on a butterfly roof frequently turns out to be the source in heavy rain. We check parapets, valleys and flashings from every safe vantage point. The findings are recorded with photos. If you’re worried about stains around a skylight and damp on a chimney breast, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Around Ringwood, chimneys on older homes are a common source of leaks, through worn flaunching, failed pointing or lifted flashings. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it is not always obvious where it starts. It’s worth looking at the stack from outside and at the timbers beside it in the loft.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

How it works
We’ll ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Being in a smaller place like Ringwood doesn’t change how the visit works: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- You get in touch with details of the leak and any photos.
- Inside, we check the damp area and the roof space above it.
- Outside, we check every likely route in.
- Moisture readings and thermal imaging are used where they help.
- Your report sets out where the water is most likely getting in, with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Check the loft hatch can be reached
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Find any records of previous roof work

Honest limits
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- Carrying out the fix
- Plumbing leaks that look like roof leaks
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we look at
- Chimney stacks
- Lead flashings
- Slate and tile slopes
- Rooflights and dormers
- The roof space
- Flat roof details
- Valleys and parapet gutters
Different roofs, different checks
Flat roof upstands and outlets
The upturned edge of a flat roof covering keeps water out at walls. If it is too low, cracked or poorly dressed, water gets behind it.
Valleys
Valleys collect water from two roof slopes. Split lead, cracked linings or slipped tiles let water in.
Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Mention any plumbing above the damp area
- Keep a photo record of the damp patch
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Let us know what has already been tried
Keep the report after the work is done. If water appears again, it shows what was found before.
Keep the roof space ventilated. Air movement keeps condensation down, which is often mistaken for a leak. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Why act early in Ringwood
Damp loft insulation loses much of its value. A slow leak can soak it for months before a stain appears. Catching it early limits what has to be replaced. Homes in smaller places like Ringwood can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Wind gets under it and lifts more, and water follows.

Common questions in Ringwood
Do you cover Ringwood?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Ringwood as anywhere else.
Is Ringwood within the area you cover?
Yes, Ringwood is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Why isn’t the leak directly above the stain?
Rain that gets in will run along whatever it lands on. On a pitched roof it often runs down a rafter before it finds a way through the ceiling. Following that route is what our investigation does.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Can a leak be traced on a dry day?
In most cases, yes. Moisture detection shows where materials are damp even on a dry day. If a leak only appears in driving rain from one direction, we’ll tell you what we found and what’s most likely.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
