How the survey changes by roof type

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Joints and fixings are the weak points on metal gutters. We record any corrosion or leaks we see.

Cast iron gutters

Cracks frequently open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we check the wall behind for staining.

Gutter survey in Marchwood

We check the rainwater system above ground level: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It’s not a CCTV drain survey and we can’t see inside buried drains. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, we’ll say so in the report, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. If you’ve noticed gutters that have fallen out of line and choked outlets or hopper heads, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Trees around homes in smaller places like Marchwood drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from the ground.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Marchwood: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Marchwood?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Marchwood, take more of a battering?

Often, yes. Marchwood is within about 1 mile of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.

Can the survey be at a weekend?

Yes. Surveys are carried out on weekdays and at weekends. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form to arrange a day.

How long will you be on site?

For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.

Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?

Overflowing gutters often lead to damp walls, and we check for exactly that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we’ll say so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later as overflowing water can damage walls.

What does a gutter survey cost?

The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form for a price.

What we’re asked to look at in Marchwood

Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.

We’re often asked to look at:

  • Dripping or leaking gutter joints
  • Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
  • Sagging gutters and loose brackets
  • Valley or box gutters that overflow inside

Take a building like Marchwood Junior School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

What to check before booking

  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Their report turnaround times
  • Their track record with similar roofs

What to expect from a roof survey

Checking the roof from ground level

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Gutter surveys around Marchwood

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Marchwood, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.

Take an older house close to Church of St John the Apostle: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Southampton Tudor House and Garden, about 2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Marchwood. On a period home nearby, the survey separates sound original work from tired later repairs.

Marchwood is about 3 miles south-east of Totton, in Hampshire. Marchwood is one of many places we visit across Hampshire. Our Hampshire coverage includes Marchwood.

Surveys in SO40 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Local streets include Cranberry Close, Melick Close and The Rowans, all of which we cover. Within a short drive, we also cover Winchester (13 miles north-east), Gosport (14 miles south-east), Eastleigh (7 miles north-east), Fareham (11 miles east), Totton (3 miles north-west) and Chandler's Ford (7 miles north-east).

How the survey works

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a smaller place like Marchwood, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where applicable.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

How to prepare

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

What this survey cannot tell you

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Pipes below ground level
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes
  • Gutters out of sight from every safe vantage point

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
