How a gutter survey works in New Milton

Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork often trace back to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, as far as can be seen safely. If the evidence points elsewhere, like a flashing or the roof covering, we will say so, with a suggested next step. We are often asked to look into soffits marked by water and overflowing eaves gutters, on valley gutters, eaves gutters and fascias and soffits.

Houses in smaller places like New Milton can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A close look shows whether anything has started to loosen. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the gutter, any defects and our written recommendations.

How the survey works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. For a survey in New Milton, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Tell us about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

What happens if roof problems are left?

A dripping joint or sagging bracket will not get better on its own. Each heavy rain puts more water where it shouldn’t be, on walls, timber and sometimes inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. Around New Milton, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than the original defect.

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

How the survey changes by roof type

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Metal gutters are common on commercial buildings and some homes. Joints, outlets and fixings are the parts we focus on.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. Their joints can leak as the seals wear and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.

Tips that help

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Keep climbers away from the eaves
  • Check from the ground or a window, not a ladder
  • Look for downpipes coming loose
  • Watch for green marks down the brickwork

After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over. If it does not, tell whoever did the work.

Get the gutters cleared every year or more frequently near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.

Your questions about gutter surveys in New Milton

I let a flat near New Milton station. Can you check the roof?

Of course. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and we can send the report to you or your agent.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in New Milton?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

How much is a gutter survey?

Prices start from £150, including VAT. The size of the property and the access affect the price. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?

We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside the wall itself, so the report covers what can be seen.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

What you can safely check yourself

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

How we price gutter surveys

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

For a price for your roof in New Milton, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and tell us about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in New Milton

The coast is about 2 miles or less from New Milton, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Arnewood School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Landlords with a home close to New Milton station may find that a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. The streets around a church like Parish Church of St Magdalene are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
