Roof survey in Martin, Hampshire
Roof surveys in Martin and the rest of Hampshire. We survey on any day of the week.
- Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
- Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
- Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
How it works
We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes between one and two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Cottages and farmhouses around Martin frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- You let us know about the property and any concerns.
- We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
- Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
- Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.
Before the survey
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

How a roof survey works in Martin
The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it’s relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. If you’re worried about worn lead at chimneys and abutments and ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs, we can find out what’s behind it, on chimney stacks, natural slate and the roof space alike.
Older buildings in small places like Martin may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Practical tips
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Let us know about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
- Gather any paperwork for past roof work
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
If you need work done, the report gives roofers a clear brief. They’ll see each defect and its location, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Have gutters and valleys cleared regularly, ideally after the leaves have fallen. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.
Common questions in Martin
Do you cover Martin?
Yes. We work right across London and the South East, and Martin is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.
Is my home in Martin listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?
Yes, the part you own or can give access to. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.
Do you give a life expectancy for the roof?
Not as a figure. The report explains the condition of each part and the signs of wear, with recommendations ranked by urgency.
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. If we see signs that need an engineer, such as serious sagging, we will say so. We don’t provide structural calculations.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
What we look for on each type of roof
Lead flashings and valleys
Flashings close the joints where a roof meets a wall or chimney. Lifted, split or slipped lead is recorded, and for flashings replaced with mortar or bitumen.
Natural slate
Inside the roof space, we check what’s under the slates. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none.
Roof surveys in Martin: local notes
If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of All Saints, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

What a survey costs
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
What to let us know when you get in touch
When you call or email, these details help:

- When you need the report by

When to book a survey in Martin
The underlay under the coverings matters too. Breathable roofing membranes came into use in the UK in the late 1990s, so many older roofs have bitumen felt underlay, and some very old roofs have no underlay at all. Torn or sagging felt lets water through.
People normally book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Torn or sagging underlay
- Leaning or weathered chimney stacks
- Valley linings that have cracked or split
For any home in Martin, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.
Questions to ask before you book
- Their track record with similar roofs
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
Why get it checked now?
Leaks rarely show up right away. Damp spreads through insulation and timber before anything shows below. From inside the loft space, we can often spot it sooner. Older and listed buildings around Martin may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.
