What a survey costs

Prices always include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • The size of the roof
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Basic, Standard or Premium

To find out what your survey will cost, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Helping us price your survey

You do not need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to let us know:

  • Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email when you are ready.

How a gutter survey works in Martin

This survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Anything we find above ground, such as a split hopper or a leaking downpipe, is photographed and recorded. Common reasons to book are downpipes that are split or coming away and joints that drip after rain, on downpipes, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits.

Somewhere as small as Martin, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

When to book a survey in Martin

Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that holds water in the gutter and gives plants somewhere to grow.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Overflowing eaves gutters
  • Joints that drip after rain
  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Gutters packed with leaves or moss

The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • What insurance they carry
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Their report turnaround times

What to expect from a roof survey

Tips that help

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Look for downpipes coming loose
  • Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
  • Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks

Once work is carried out, keep an eye on the gutters in the next downpour. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.

Get the gutters cleared every year, and more frequently if trees overhang the roof. The best time is typically after the leaves have dropped. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.

What happens on the day

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a small place like Martin, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Let us know about parking before the day

What a gutter survey doesn’t cover

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
  • Gutters out of sight from each safe vantage point

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Fascias and soffits
  • Valley gutters
  • Eaves gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Downpipes

What happens if roof problems are left?

Damp walls are sometimes blamed on the wrong thing. If a leaking gutter or downpipe is the source, other work on the wall will not stop it. A gutter survey helps rule the rainwater system in or out. Outbuildings and barns around Martin are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

FAQs for Martin

Do you cover smaller places like Martin?

Yes. Martin is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Martin?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos testing. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.

How much is a gutter survey?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes, as far as they can be seen safely. We look from vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it is applicable.

How do I arrange a gutter survey in Martin?

It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we will recommend the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Do you look in the loft space?

Where it’s relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

Martin homes and their roofs

Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

Whatever the street in Martin, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.
