Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in New Forest

Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photographs show you exactly what we found. It’s an easy job to put off but it rarely improves. If you’ve noticed water spilling over the gutter edge and leaves and moss blocking gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on downpipes, fascias and soffits and parapet and box gutters alike.

Older buildings in small places like New Forest may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.

What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Gutter surveys in New Forest: local notes

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.

For any home in New Forest, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.

New Forest questions

Do you cover New Forest?

We do. The survey and report are the same in New Forest as anywhere else.

How do I find out if my home in New Forest is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

What’s in the report?

A photo-illustrated written report, covering the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Do you survey at weekends?

Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email to arrange a day.

What insurance do you have?

We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

How quickly is the report sent?

That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Is a CCTV drain survey included?

No, we don’t carry out CCTV drain surveys. We check gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.

The survey, step by step

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Rural addresses near New Forest can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
  4. The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. A written report with photos and recommendations follows.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Clearing gutters removes the debris but it won’t explain why water keeps spilling over. We also check the falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes, so you know whether there is more to it. In a small place like New Forest, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

What a gutter survey does not cover

It helps to know what a survey will not do before booking:

  • Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
  • Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
  • Gutters out of sight from every safe vantage point

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Fascias and soffits
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Valley gutters
  • Eaves gutters
  • Downpipes

Can I check my roof myself?

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

What we are asked to look at in New Forest

Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.

Problems we come across frequently include:

  • Brackets that have dropped or snapped
  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Water spilling over the gutter edge
  • Overflowing valley or parapet gutters

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of All Saints, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

What’s in a roof survey

How the survey changes by roof type

Box and secret gutters

Box gutters sit within the roof or behind a wall, so overflows can end up inside. We check them where they can be seen safely.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

On plastic systems, slipped joints are one of the most common faults. We record each one we can see.
