How a drone roof survey works in New Forest
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. If a drone is not the right tool, we will say so. We survey tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and cracked mortar along the ridge.
In a small place like New Forest, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Why it’s worth a survey now in New Forest
Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Finding them now means less to put right, whatever height the roof is. In a small place like New Forest, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

The survey, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Somewhere like New Forest needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice
When to book a survey in New Forest
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
Common reasons to book include:
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
- Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
- Lifted or split lead flashings
Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- What happens after the report arrives
Your questions about drone roof surveys in New Forest
Is my home in New Forest listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you come out to New Forest?
Yes. New Forest is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Are there drone restrictions in central London?
Central London has restricted areas where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t possible, we inspect by other means.
Does your drone take thermal images?
Our drone survey is about close-up photographs. If you need thermal imaging, it’s part of the Premium Survey, as a separate check.
How fast do I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
Does the drone show the underside of the roof?
No. It photographs the outside, not the inside. For the underside, we check the loft where it can be reached safely.
Tips that help
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Let us know about any leaks or concerns
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, especially in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
For landlords and managing agents
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. We survey on any day of the week, which can make access easier.
If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
