How a drone roof survey works in Golden Pot

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we will say so. Common reasons to book are vegetation in valleys and gutters and lead work pulling away at abutments, on tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.

In a village or hamlet like Golden Pot, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

How the survey works

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Cottages and farmhouses around Golden Pot frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Advice

Roof by roof

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. Their condition is noted in the report.

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

Tips that help

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. You can show exactly where the problem is, which helps when you ask for quotes. In a small place like Golden Pot, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Every price we give includes VAT. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before booking.

Checking the roof from ground level

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Golden Pot

Golden Pot is about 3 miles from Lasham Airfield, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Golden Pot: your questions answered

Will you come out to Golden Pot?

Yes, Golden Pot is covered. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Golden Pot is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Can you fly a drone near an airport?

That depends on where the roof is. Flying inside a flight restriction zone needs permission from the airport or air traffic control. Allow a little extra time if your home is close to an airport.

How much is a survey?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, inc. VAT.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

Are you insured?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach.
