Your questions about drone roof surveys in Upper Street

How do I find out if my home in Upper Street is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Upper Street?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

How experienced are you?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only if it’s safe. We inspect what can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

How a drone roof survey works in Upper Street

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We survey chimney stacks, valleys and parapet gutters and fragile roofs, and people most frequently book us about outlets choked with leaves and silt and chimney tops in poor condition.

Older buildings in small places like Upper Street may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

How the survey works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older rural homes like those around Upper Street can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets in another room
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
  • Tell us where we can park nearby

Booking a survey

Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.

Drones, thermal imaging and Upper Street roofs

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Historic houses like Breamore House, about 0.5 miles north-east, show how far back building around Upper Street goes. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Breamore Church of England Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What a survey costs

We confirm the price for your roof before booking. These are the things that affect it:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • The roof’s overall size
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

Every price we give includes VAT. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

What we need to know

The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, let us know:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage

When you are ready to go ahead, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date, weekday or weekend.

Why act early in Upper Street

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It helps when you plan ahead. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Upper Street?

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. From ground level, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. Close-up drone photos show their condition.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:

  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

What to check before booking

  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • What the survey won’t cover
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?

What’s in a roof survey

What we cannot see

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
