Drone roof survey in The Hummicks: what you get

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it can’t see inside. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. Typical surveys look at storm damage on steep or tall roofs and debris building up in hidden gutters, across valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.

In a village or hamlet like The Hummicks, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Flying and imaging in The Hummicks

The Hummicks lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Beaulieu Village Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. Beaulieu Palace House lies about 0.9 miles north-west, so building around The Hummicks goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. If you live in an older home near Church of the Blessed Virgin and Child, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

The Hummicks is about 4 miles south-west of Hythe, in Hampshire. In The Hummicks, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Across Hampshire, we cover The Hummicks and the places around it. You can also see our page for Southampton.

Drone roof surveys in SO42 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Neighbouring places we cover for drone roof surveys include Bailey's Hard (1 mile south-west), Beaulieu (1 mile north-west), East Boldre (2 miles west), Furzey Lodge (2 miles west) and Dibden Purlieu (3 miles north). Within a short drive, we also cover Gosport (12 miles east), Eastleigh (11 miles north), Fareham (11 miles east), Totton (8 miles north-west), Chandler's Ford (12 miles north) and Hedge End (9 miles north-east).

Prices for drone roof surveys in The Hummicks

Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and which survey you book.

Booking your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

When you’re ready to go ahead, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date, weekday or weekend.

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are frequently seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

What happens on the day

We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like The Hummicks, access is typically the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Before the survey

  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

What happens if roof problems are left?

Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Outbuildings and barns around The Hummicks are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

All our prices include VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your roof before booking.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

Common questions in The Hummicks

Can you fly a drone over a roof in The Hummicks?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in The Hummicks?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

What does the report include?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

How quickly is the report sent?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not unless it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

How much is a survey?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.
