Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Eastleigh

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it isn’t safe. If you’ve noticed worn lead at chimneys and walls and cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Around a town like Eastleigh, steep roofs, tall gables and rear slopes are frequently hidden from ground level. A drone can take close-up photos of them, and thermal imaging can show patterns of heat loss or trapped moisture. Both depend on the weather on the day. A typical example is the rear slope over a back addition, which cannot be seen from the street.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What happens on the day

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. A typical visit in Eastleigh begins with the street side of the roof and then moves round the building. The back garden is often where extensions, dormers and rear slopes are best seen, so unlocked gates help. Then, if it can be reached safely, we look in the loft.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.

When to book a survey in Eastleigh

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

We are frequently asked to look at:

  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs

South Stoneham House, about 2.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Eastleigh. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

What a good roof survey covers

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Our packages start from £150, inc. VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • Roof area

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

Booking your survey

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. You will have a price before anything is arranged.

Eastleigh questions

Are there drone restrictions around Eastleigh?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport covers Eastleigh, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Do you cover Eastleigh?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Eastleigh as anywhere else.

Does the weather affect the survey?

It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.

How long does the survey take?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Drone roof surveys around Eastleigh

The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport covers Eastleigh, or comes right up to its edge. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it is given. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.

Take a building like Norwood Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. For an older house near a landmark like Church of the Resurrection, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Roof by roof

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

Ridges and hips

Loose ridge pieces can be lifted in a storm. Spotting them early stops them falling.

Before and after the survey

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Book early if you are near an airport
  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
