Drone roof survey in Southampton: what you get

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. If you’ve noticed cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and outlets choked with leaves and silt, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In a place like Southampton, offices, shops, schools and blocks of flats often have big flat roofs. Water trapped under a flat covering can spread well beyond where it got in. Aerial photos show the whole roof at once, and anything a thermal image suggests is checked with moisture readings. Plant, rooflights and fragile panels can make a large roof unsafe to walk on.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Checking the roof from the ground

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

What affects the price in Southampton

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • The roof’s overall size

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and which survey you book.

Getting in touch

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage

Drones, thermal imaging and Southampton roofs

Southampton lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport covers Southampton, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given.

Southampton Tudor House and Garden lies about 1.4 miles south, so building around Southampton goes back a long way. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Southampton means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Saint Mary's, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Southampton: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Southampton is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Southampton?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.

How soon will I get the report?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, let us know when you book.

What will the report tell me?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

Can a drone see inside my loft?

No. It shows what’s on the outside. The underside tells us things the drone can’t, so we inspect the roof space as well where access is safe.

How the survey works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Visits in a place the size of Southampton range from flats and family homes to offices and blocks. Access is the part that changes most from one building to the next, so it is agreed before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both available.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Book a survey

A quick phone call is usually the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Book early if you are near an airport
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.
