Our drone roof survey service in Southampton

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. We survey large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are ridge and hip pieces working loose and outlets choked with leaves and silt.

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

What you will pay

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Drone roof surveys across Southampton: local notes

In Southampton, every drone flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, from Shirley, Regents Park and Townhill Park to the quieter places in between. Flights that need permission only go ahead once it is given.

Autumn and winter storms across the South East find any loose slate, tile or ridge. Ridges, verges and flashings in Southampton are where it normally shows. Southampton includes coastal places, where roofs take more wind and salt than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose.

Southampton: If you live in an older home near Saint Mary's, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. For businesses in and around places such as Marlands Shopping Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

How the survey changes by roof type

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep roofs are risky to walk on. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

What we are asked to look at in Southampton

Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. From above, they’re easy to see.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings

What this survey can’t tell you

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.

Southampton questions

What does the report include?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. The most urgent items are made clear.

Are you insured?

We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.

How fast do I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

Privacy is taken seriously on every flight. We photograph your roof, not your neighbours’ property. It’s worth telling neighbours about the flight.

Are you registered with the CAA?

Yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Our drone weighs under 250g and follow the drone code.
