How a drone roof survey works in Itchen
We carry out drone roof surveys in Itchen and across London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. Every address is checked for airspace restrictions first. You get a written report with close-up photographs and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. We survey fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are wind damage high on the roof and lead work pulling away at abutments.
Around Itchen, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps with budgets and planning.
Why it is worth a survey now in Itchen
Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. Looking from above picks up the early signs. In an older home around Itchen, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than the original defect.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £400, including VAT.
Why us?
- Surveys seven days a week
- CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID)
- 98% customer satisfaction
- Packages from £150, with VAT included

Drone roof surveys around Itchen
Itchen is within about 2 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport comes within about 1 mile of Itchen. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly.
The streets around a church such as Jesus Chapel - St Mary Extra are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Hotels and guest houses near Itchen cannot easily close rooms for a leak, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition. If you run a business near Marlands Shopping Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

What a survey costs
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Height and safe access
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- The size of the roof
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.
What we need to know
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:
- The property’s address and postcode
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and give us a few details about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

What else we do in Itchen
What we look for on each type of roof
Ridges and hips
Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them, so the survey does not add damage.
What we do, step by step
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. A visit to a smaller place like Itchen is no different on the day: we look from ground level, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it is safe. It is useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
- We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets in another room
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Check the loft hatch can be reached

Advice
Checking the roof from ground level
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
