About our drone roof survey in Sholing

We carry out drone roof surveys in Sholing and across London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photos and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address. Common reasons to book are flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and cracked mortar along the ridge, across large and complex roofs, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs.

Around Sholing, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Honest limits

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:

  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs

What we look for on each type of roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. A drone avoids that.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. Each defect is photographed for the report.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Sholing

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters

The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

What to check before booking

  • When you’ll get the report
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • What follow-up you get after the report

Yes, Sholing is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport comes within about 1 mile of Sholing. What’s in the survey report?

Airspace, weather and Sholing roofs

Sholing lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport comes within about 1 mile of Sholing. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first.

If you look after a building such as St Monica Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Medieval Merchant's House lies about 2.2 miles west, so building around Sholing goes back a long way. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Practical tips

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photographs and findings. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Make sure insulation does not block the airflow.

How the survey works

When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely. Most surveys take about one to two hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. For a survey in Sholing, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
