Airspace, weather and Eling roofs
Eling lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
Shop and office owners around Westquay may find that large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from above or with a thermal imager. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Eling Infant School and Nursery, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Drone roof survey in Eling
Drones need reasonable weather. We don’t fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge and hip pieces working loose and moss building up on slopes and in gutters.
Places like Eling can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.
It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Roof by roof
Chimney stacks
Chimney tops are hard to see from ground level. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.
Valleys and parapet gutters
Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photographs included.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant, which helps when budgeting.
What this survey can’t tell you
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Fragile roofs
What you can safely check yourself
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Why act early in Eling
Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller, whatever height the roof is. Blocked gutters on homes around Eling overflow and soak walls, particularly where trees overhang. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

How the survey works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. For a survey in Eling, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Advice
Eling questions
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Eling?
Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
Is Eling within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Will you check the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.
How long is the visit?
It usually takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.
