Thermal roof surveys around Eling
Eling lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Anyone responsible for a site like Eling Infant School and Nursery will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. Southampton Tudor House and Garden, about 3.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Eling. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Thermal roof survey in Eling: what you get
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We survey flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and loft conversions, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps in loft insulation and water that travels before it shows.
Places like Eling can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Roof by roof
Loft insulation
The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it is cold out. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. The camera can give clues to where it’s sitting, when the conditions allow.
What affects the price in Eling
Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- The roof’s overall size
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
Getting in touch
Some details help us suggest the right survey and price. When you get in touch, it helps to mention:
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email when you’re ready.
Before and after the survey
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
Where a pattern can’t be confirmed, the report says what could help, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Eling
Is my home in Eling listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you cover Eling?
Yes. We work right across London and South East England, and Eling is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Does someone need to be in?
Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- A formal energy assessment
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roof types and parts we check
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Flat roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Eling
Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Water that travels before it shows
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Stains that keep coming back
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Before booking anyone
- Is VAT included in the price?
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- What insurance they carry
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
What we do, step by step
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit typically takes an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Eling, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
