FAQs for Lord's Wood
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Lord's Wood?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover smaller places like Lord's Wood?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.
Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?
Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g.
Does your drone take thermal images?
The drone survey is a photographic inspection. Thermal imaging is a separate check, and it is part of the Premium Survey.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Lord's Wood
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. If you’re worried about blistered or cracked flat roof coverings and worn lead at chimneys and walls, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Lord's Wood, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

How the survey changes by roof type
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. Photos show how the covering is wearing.
Valleys and parapet gutters
Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. It is almost impossible to see from the ground, but a drone shows it clearly.
Leave it or get it looked at?
A drone record gives you a baseline. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It is useful for planning maintenance over the years. Older and listed buildings around Lord's Wood may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

How we price drone roof surveys
All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:
- The shape of the roof and its details
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- The roof’s overall size
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
What to let us know when you get in touch
There is no need for technical words. Just let us know:
- What kind of property and roof it is
- The address and postcode of the property
- What’s prompted the survey
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
Useful tips for Lord's Wood property owners
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Book early if you are near an airport
- Tell us the exact address when booking
You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to talk through the photos and findings. You can ask about anything that is not clear.
Keep the roof space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Make sure insulation does not block the airflow.
How it works
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It usually takes an hour or two for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere like Lord's Wood needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Flying and imaging in Lord's Wood
Lord's Wood is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it’s given. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
South Stoneham House lies about 4.1 miles south-west, so building around Lord's Wood goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Take an older house close to St Mary's Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building such as Colden Common Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.
