Flying and imaging in Chandler's Ford
Chandler's Ford is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it is given. The wider area around Chandler's Ford has a long history of building, with South Stoneham House about 3.4 miles south. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Take an older house close to St Boniface: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How a drone roof survey works in Chandler's Ford
Drones need reasonable weather. High wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you are worried about slipped or missing slates on a high roof and lead work pulling away at abutments, we can find out what’s behind it, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs alike.
For a town like Chandler's Ford, every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map, which shows restriction zones around airports and prisons. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning every flight. Flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight, as the open category requires.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

What we do, step by step
It is useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take about one to two hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In Chandler's Ford, many roofs join a neighbour’s, so we look at what can be seen of the shared parts from your side. It helps to know about previous repairs, leaks or recent work, so time on site goes where it’s needed.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
Before we arrive
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- Tell us about parking before the day
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
Arrange a survey
Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.
Advice
DIY checks: what’s safe
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.
What this survey can’t tell you
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

What we’re asked to look at in Chandler's Ford
Many roofs are never seen properly from the ground. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Vegetation in valleys and gutters
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
Take a building like Chandler's Ford Infant School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Questions from Chandler's Ford
Is my home in Chandler's Ford listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Chandler's Ford?
Yes, Chandler's Ford is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Will I get photos?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Does your drone take thermal images?
Our drone takes close-up photos of the roof. Thermal imaging is carried out separately, included in our Premium Survey.
Are there drone restrictions in central London?
In some places, only with permission. Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas that need NATS permission. We check each address first.
