Thermal imaging roof survey in The Hummicks, Hampshire
Wondering about the roof at a property in The Hummicks? You can book a thermal roof survey in The Hummicks and across Hampshire, with plain-English findings.
- Stains that keep coming back
- Water that travels before it shows
- Heat escaping through the roof
About our thermal roof survey in The Hummicks
We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. Typical surveys look at patches of heat loss across the roof and cold spots on ceilings under the roof, across commercial roofs, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces.
Villages like The Hummicks often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Tips that help
You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Because the images are paired with photos, it is easy to find each area on the roof.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
What we cannot see
No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Loft conversions
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
The survey, step by step
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. On timing, it normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like The Hummicks, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Getting ready for the survey
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Let us know about parking near the property

Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
The Hummicks: your questions answered
Is The Hummicks within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Is my home in The Hummicks listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It frequently helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone can’t prove a leak.
Does someone need to be in?
Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.
How long will you be at the property?
It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. We’ll confirm the timing when you book.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We check everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can be useful, though pitched roofs are normally harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we also look from the loft where it is safe.
Thermal roof surveys in The Hummicks: local notes
The Hummicks is within about 2 miles of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Beaulieu Palace House, about 0.9 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around The Hummicks. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you look after a building such as Beaulieu Village Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. For an older house near a landmark like Church of the Blessed Virgin and Child, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
The Hummicks is about 4 miles south-west of Hythe, in Hampshire. We visit The Hummicks as part of our work across Hampshire. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire. You can also see our page for Southampton.

Landlord and commercial surveys in The Hummicks
