How a thermal roof survey works in Dibden Purlieu
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access. We survey insulated roof spaces, flat roofs and pitched roof slopes, and people most often book us about damp that repairs haven’t cured and cold areas below the roof.
Around Dibden Purlieu, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.
The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

FAQs for Dibden Purlieu
How do I find out if my home in Dibden Purlieu is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover Dibden Purlieu?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and Dibden Purlieu is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.
How experienced are you?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.
What happens on the day
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take about one to two hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a smaller place like Dibden Purlieu, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Getting ready for the survey
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
Getting a price
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or email us whenever suits you.
Advice
How the survey changes by roof type
Pitched slate and tile roofs
On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there’s a pattern around them.
What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Thermal roof surveys around Dibden Purlieu
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Dibden Purlieu, and coastal wind can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Historic houses such as Beaulieu Palace House, about 2.9 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Dibden Purlieu goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you run a business near Westquay, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see by drone or thermal camera. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St. Andrew's Church and Centre, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Wildground Infant School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before booking:
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture

Tips from our surveys
Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Keep a record of when stains appear
Buyers can use the findings when talking to the seller or agent. It’s your decision how to use it, whether that’s asking for work or discussing the price.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
