Thermal imaging roof survey in Winchester, Hampshire
A careful look at the roof at your property in Winchester, with photos and a written report.

- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
How a thermal roof survey works in Winchester
Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. You also get a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. To book, just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. Common reasons to book are water getting in at parapets and stacks and leaks far from where the stain appears, on flat roofs, commercial roofs and pitched roof slopes.
Conditions on the day matter: a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal images are clearest after a sunny day, on a dry roof, with little wind. In Winchester, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part in when the visit happens. A look inside the loft space can go ahead whatever the forecast.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

What we look for on each type of roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which often helps the camera pick up differences. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Winchester questions
Is my home in Winchester listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Winchester?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Winchester is part of that. Just phone 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.
Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
How fast do I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.
Thermal roof surveys around Winchester
If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Winchester, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, frequently have flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
Hotels and guest houses near Winchester cannot easily close rooms for a leak, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition. Anyone responsible for a site like St Bede Church of England Primary School will know that big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. The streets around a church like St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
Roof types and parts we check
- Pitched roof slopes
- Flat roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
What happens on the day
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. All in, the survey usually takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. In busier parts of Winchester, parking can be tight, so tell us about driveways, permits or nearby car parks. On the day, we look at the roof from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe, with the drone where applicable.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
How to prepare
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Before and after the survey
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
If you are buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. It’s your decision how to use it, whether you ask for work before completion or discuss the price.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry in suitable weather.
