How a thermal roof survey works in Hyde
Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. You also get a drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day. There’s an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. If you’ve noticed damp patches with no obvious cause and ceilings that feel colder in places, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Places like Hyde can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

DIY checks: what’s safe
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Common roof problems in Hyde
Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.
People usually book a survey after spotting one of these:
- Heat escaping through the roof
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
Take an older house close to St Bartholomew's Church: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
Flying and imaging in Hyde
Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.
Anyone responsible for a site like St Bede Church of England Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Hotels and guest houses near Hyde cannot easily close rooms for a leak, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition.
Hyde is about 1 mile north of Winchester, in Hampshire. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Hyde can all book thermal roof surveys. Hyde is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire where we work. We also survey roofs in Southampton.
We work across the SO23, SO22 and SO20 postcode area for thermal roof surveys and the streets around it. You’ll find streets such as Elm Road, Swan Lane and City Road, all of which we cover. Nearby, we also carry out thermal roof surveys in Abbotts Barton (1 mile north-east), Winchester (1 mile south), Weeke (1 mile west), Highcliffe (1 mile south-east) and Bar End (1 mile south). Larger places within reach include Eastleigh (7 miles south), Andover (12 miles north-west), Totton (13 miles south-west), Chandler's Ford (7 miles south-west), Hedge End (11 miles south) and Romsey (9 miles south-west).
Landmarks near Hyde
We work in homes and buildings around Peter Symonds College, Leigh House Hospital and The King Alfred pub, among other places. There’s a railway station in Hyde itself: Winchester station. Well-known places in the area include Winchester Castle (0.6 miles south-west) and Royal Observer Corps Museum (0.5 miles north). Not far away are Winnall Moors and Twyford Down.
Different roofs, different checks
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. We explain what can and can’t be read from them.
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.
Hyde: your questions answered
Is my home in Hyde listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Hyde within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
How fast do I get the report?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.
What’s the best way to book?
The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we will suggest the right survey. We survey on any day of the week.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can help, but the results are often less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you as you book.
Surveys for landlords and agents in Hyde
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.
When you need someone else
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- A formal energy assessment
- Confirming water without moisture readings
If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we check

- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions

- Flat roofs

How it works
On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen. Most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a smaller place like Hyde, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
