Drone roof surveys near Cheriton

Drone roof survey in Cheriton

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moss building up on slopes and in gutters and ponding and splits on a high flat roof.

In a small place like Cheriton, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

How the survey works

It is useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit normally takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older roofs in small places like Cheriton can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Getting ready for the survey

  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Cheriton

Is my home in Cheriton listed or in a conservation area?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Cheriton?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We carry out surveys seven days a week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect what can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Do you look in the roof space?

Usually, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof frequently shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

What this survey can’t tell you

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks

For landlords and managing agents

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Spotting them early stops them falling.

Drone roof surveys in Cheriton: local notes

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Cheriton Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Historic houses such as Hinton Ampner House, about 0.8 miles south-east, show how far back building around Cheriton goes. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. The streets around a church like Church of St Michael are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Cheriton is about 7 miles east of Winchester, in Hampshire. Whether the building in Cheriton is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. Across Hampshire, we cover Cheriton. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

Before and after the survey

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Make sure the loft can be reached
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that is not clear.

After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
