How a drone roof survey works in Rooksdown

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we are there to survey. If you’re worried about damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Even in a smaller place like Rooksdown, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Common questions in Rooksdown

Is Rooksdown within the area you cover?

Yes, Rooksdown is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Is my home in Rooksdown listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

No, the camera is kept on your roof. Neighbouring homes and gardens aren’t the subject, and flights are kept short. A quick word with the neighbours is a good idea.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in Rooksdown?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

When to book a survey in Rooksdown

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds

Anyone responsible for a site like Fort Hill Community School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • What insurance they carry

What a roof survey includes

Different roofs, different checks

Large commercial roofs

Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

What happens if roof problems are left?

With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. You can show exactly where the problem is, which helps when you ask for quotes. Homes in smaller places like Rooksdown can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Wind gets under it and lifts more.

What happens on the day

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. For a survey in Rooksdown, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Tell us about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Check pets are kept safely away

Should I look at the roof myself first?

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.
