Drone roof survey in Winklebury
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or a downpour rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. If you’ve noticed loose ridge and hip tiles and flashings that have come away, we can find out what’s behind it.
In smaller places like Winklebury, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from the ground.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we look for on each type of roof
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.
What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The size of the roof
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.
What we need to know
What helps most when you contact us:
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know the address and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price before you book.
Winklebury: your questions answered
Are there drone restrictions around Winklebury?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
Will you come out to Winklebury?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. We will rearrange with you if the weather isn’t right.
What insurance do you have?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.
How long is the visit?
Expect it to take between one and two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The written report follows by email.
What we do, step by step
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a report with photographs, emailed to you. On timing, it usually takes an hour or two at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. In a smaller place like Winklebury, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
How to book
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Advice
Checking the roof from ground level
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Tips from our surveys
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- Book early if you’re near an airport
- Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to talk through the photos and findings. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, especially in autumn. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
Drones, thermal imaging and Winklebury roofs
The wider area around Winklebury has a long history of building, with The Vyne about 3 miles north-east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
If you look after a building such as Castle Hill Infant School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near The Malls, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most.
