What happens on the day
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older rural homes like those around Tiptoe can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Drone roof survey in Tiptoe: what you get
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, fragile roofs and large and complex roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are storm damage on steep or tall roofs and ponding and splits on a high flat roof.
Villages like Tiptoe frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

For landlords and managing agents
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Bigger roofs take more time.
What you can safely check yourself
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Different roofs, different checks
Valleys and parapet gutters
Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.
Tiptoe questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tiptoe?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you cover smaller places like Tiptoe?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is your drone operator registered?
We are. Our Flyer ID and Operator ID come from the CAA, and we fly a drone that weighs under 250g, kept within sight on every flight.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
Does someone need to be in?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access when booking.
Can you fly a drone in central London?
Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, where flights need permission from NATS. We check the airspace for your address and apply where needed.
Can the drone do thermal imaging?
No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey.
Common roof problems in Tiptoe
The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are frequently invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
Common reasons to book include:
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Flashings that have come away
If you live in an older home near St Andrew, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What experience they bring
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
Leave it or get it looked at?
Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By that stage the damage has spread inside. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Tiptoe, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Tiptoe
Tiptoe lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
