How a storm damage roof report works in Tiptoe

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Take photos from the ground or from windows, and do not climb onto the roof. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We survey flashings, gutters and fascias and slate and tile slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and damaged ridges and hips.

In a village or hamlet like Tiptoe, older cottages and farmhouses frequently have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, and the difference matters, particularly to an insurer. We look at whatever is safely visible and set out what we find. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it is worth finding the cause soon.

We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Tips from our surveys

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Take photos of stains and damp inside
  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

What affects the price in Tiptoe

Our packages start from £150, with VAT included. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • Height and safe access
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form, let us know about the property and we’ll point you to the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

Checking the roof from the ground

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

When to book a survey in Tiptoe

Gusts work at anything on a roof that is loose or exposed. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. Most people book a report soon after a storm, when they’ve seen damage or water has come in.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Damaged ridges and hips
  • Damaged gutters and fascias

For an older house near a landmark like St Andrew, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • What the survey won’t cover
  • How long the report takes to arrive

What a good roof survey covers

How it works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey typically takes an hour or two at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Cottages and farmhouses around Tiptoe often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Tiptoe

Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed ahead of time. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.

Tiptoe roofs and the weather

The coast is about 3 miles or less from Tiptoe, where storms can bring strong gusts off the sea. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Tiptoe Primary School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. With Highcliffe Castle about 4.6 miles south-west, the area around Tiptoe has a long history. Older roofs in the area may have lead flashings, valleys and gutters that have been patched many times.

Common questions in Tiptoe

Is the coastal weather around Tiptoe hard on roofs?

It can do. Within about 3 miles of the sea, as Tiptoe is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Is Tiptoe within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Do you look in the roof space?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it is safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

We cannot say whether a claim will be paid. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

What if the roof was already worn?

Wear and tear is usually excluded from home insurance. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so it is clear what we found. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.
