Tiptoe Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal roof surveys across Tiptoe, backed by more than 20 years’ experience. You get a clear report with photographs.
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Thermal roof survey in Tiptoe
Thermal imaging is often most useful on flat roofs, from small extensions to large commercial roofs. Patterns can suggest where water is trapped under the covering. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. We survey insulated roof spaces, pitched roof slopes and loft conversions, and the problems we are asked to look at most are damp around roof outlets and upstands and stains that keep coming back.
Older buildings in small places like Tiptoe may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Roof by roof
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. The camera can give clues to where it’s sitting, when the conditions allow.
Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference. Some pointers:
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.

Questions from Tiptoe
Do you cover smaller places like Tiptoe?
Yes, Tiptoe is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Tiptoe?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Tiptoe as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
What happens on the day
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. On timing, most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Tiptoe, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Why it is worth a survey now in Tiptoe
A damp patch that keeps coming back normally has a cause that hasn’t been found. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, instead of trying repair after repair. Outbuildings and barns around Tiptoe are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Drones, thermal imaging and Tiptoe roofs
Tiptoe is within about 3 miles of the coast. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
The streets around a church like St Andrew are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. With Highcliffe Castle about 4.6 miles south-west, the area around Tiptoe has a long history. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Anyone responsible for a site like Tiptoe Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
