Airspace, weather and Hordle roofs
Hordle is within about 2 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Historic houses such as Highcliffe Castle, about 4.4 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Hordle goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.
If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. If you look after a building such as Hordle CofE (VA) Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Drone roof survey in Hordle: what you get
We carry out drone roof surveys in Hordle and across London and South East England, subject to airspace checks and the weather. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photographs and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. We’re often asked to look into cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and chimney tops in poor condition, on fragile roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs.
Around Hordle, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
How the survey works
The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. In total, it takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Hordle, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Advice
Hordle questions
Are there drone restrictions around Hordle?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Is Hordle within the area you cover?
Yes, Hordle is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
When does the report arrive?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
Can you survey in bad weather?
It depends on the weather and the survey. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it does not include calculations. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

When you need someone else
It is useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:
- A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roofs we survey in Hordle
- Fragile roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Tall and steep roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Valleys and parapet gutters
What happens if roof problems are left?
On a tall building, problems are frequently found only when water comes in. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. A drone survey finds them sooner. Around Hordle, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.

Before and after the survey
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, especially in autumn. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
