Airspace, weather and Downton roofs

Downton is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

With Highcliffe Castle about 4.2 miles west, the area around Downton has a long history. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hordle CofE (VA) Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Downton is about 3 miles west of Lymington, in Hampshire. We cover Downton and the rest of Hampshire. Across Hampshire, we cover Downton and the places around it. Southampton is in our area too.

All of SO41 is covered for drone roof surveys, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Local streets include Hordle Lane and Shorefield Road, all of which we cover. Close by, we survey roofs in Leagreen (1 mile east), Hordle (1 mile north), Ashley (2 miles north-west), Barton on Sea (2 miles west) and New Milton (2 miles north-west). Larger places within reach include Totton (13 miles north), Lymington (3 miles east), Hythe (13 miles north-east), Ringwood (10 miles north-west), Dibden Purlieu (12 miles north-east) and Marchwood (13 miles north-east).

How a drone roof survey works in Downton

Drone roof surveys are available in Downton and throughout London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. We fly seven days a week. Every address is checked for airspace restrictions first. You get a written report with close-up photographs and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. We survey fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are worn lead at chimneys and walls and gaps where slates or tiles have gone.

Villages like Downton frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Common questions in Downton

Will you come out to Downton?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Downton?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

Does the weather affect the survey?

Light rain is normally fine; heavy rain and wind are different. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.

What insurance do you have?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Why get it checked now?

A drone record gives you a baseline. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. Outbuildings and barns around Downton are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Downton?

Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Wind damage high on the roof

Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?

What a good roof survey covers

Landlord and commercial surveys in Downton

Landlords and letting agents in Downton book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, useful for planning maintenance.

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.

Practical tips

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

We email the report to you, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Findings are set out in plain English, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.

What a survey costs

Several things affect the price of a survey:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Which survey package you book
  • Roof area
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both inc. VAT. You’ll know the price for your roof before booking.

What we need to know

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • When you need the report by
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • What kind of property and roof it is

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window. To get started, call 07833 053749 or email us.

What we do, step by step

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Rural addresses near Downton can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Booking a survey

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form to find out.
