Common questions in Heath End

Are there drone restrictions around Heath End?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is Heath End within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

What’s in the survey report?

A report with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Drone roof survey in Heath End

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it cannot see under the coverings or into the loft. Where there is safe access, we look in the loft space too, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. Where the loft can’t be reached safely, we note it. Common reasons to book are ridge pieces that have lifted and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, across large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and chimney stacks.

In a village or hamlet like Heath End, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Tips from our surveys

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Book early if you are near an airport
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Let us know what you want to see

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly.

Look at the roof from the ground after strong winds. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone can show exactly what has moved.

Roof by roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. You can’t see it from the street at all, but it is plain to see from the air.

Large commercial roofs

Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

Airspace, weather and Heath End roofs

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Saint Mary's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For site and facilities teams at buildings like The Hurst School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

The survey, step by step

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a hamlet or village like Heath End, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Leave it or get it looked at?

With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. They show the location and extent of each defect, which helps when you ask for quotes. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Heath End, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.
